TUESDAY, JUNE 30

AMERICAN LEAGUE

Tampa Bay (43-35) at Toronto (41-37)

The surging Rays send right-hander Matt Garza (5-5, 3.61 ERA) to the mound at Rogers Centre for the second game of their series with the division rival Blue Jays, who will counter with righty Scott Richmond (6-4, 3.68).

Tampa Bay posted a 4-1 victory in Monday night’s opener, with Carl Crawford welcoming Toronto starter Roy Halladay back from the DL with a two-run homer in the third inning. The Rays have won eight of their last nine games, including the last six in a row, and are on a 20-8 run overall. However, Tampa is still just 5-10 in its last 15 road games.

Toronto is on a 16-8 run at home against teams with a losing road record, but the Jays have won just two of their last 12 division contests.

This is the first series of the year between these rivals. Last year, Tampa Bay went 11-7 against Toronto, though the Jays earned a three-game home sweep in their final meeting in early September.

Tampa has lost four of its last six with Garza on the hill, but the 25-year-old was sharp last Wednesday against the World Series champion Phillies in a 7-1 home victory. Garza allowed just one run on three hits and three walks, with seven strikeouts, in eight innings. Garza is 3-3 with a solid 1.99 ERA in six career starts against Toronto, but he’s 1-3 with a 4.29 ERA in six road starts this season, and the Rays have lost in his last five outings on the highway.

Toronto has won eight of 12 games this year with Richmond starting, and the 29-year-old is coming off a good effort at home against Cincinnati last Wednesday. Richmond allowed two runs on two hits and two walks in seven innings of an 8-2 victory. Richmond is 3-2 with a 3.92 ERA in eight appearances (six starts) at home this year, and he is 0-1 with a 5.06 ERA in his lone career appearance against Tampa, allowing all three runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings of a 3-2 home loss last July.

The under for Tampa Bay is on rolls of 5-1 on the road, 14-5-1 against right-handers, 6-0 overall with Garza starting and 6-0 in Garza’s last six starts on the highway. Likewise, the under for Toronto is on streaks of 7-2-1 against winning teams, 11-4 in division play, 8-2 behind Richmond at Rogers Centre and 4-1 with Richmond facing A.L. East foes.

Finally, in this rivalry, the under has hit in 24 of the last 34 clashes and is on further runs of 15-6 in Toronto and 4-1 with Garza starting against the Jays.

ATS ADVANTAGE: TORONTO and UNDER

L.A. Angels (42-32) at Texas (40-35)

The Angels look to strengthen their grip on first place in the A.L. West when they trot out left-hander Joe Saunders (8-4, 3.66 ERA) to face right-hander Scott Feldman (5-2, 4.06) and the rival Rangers in Game 2 of their series at the Ballpark in Arlington.

Los Angeles earned a 5-2 win Monday in the series opener, on the strength of a four-run sixth inning and a solid six innings from rookie starter Sean O’Sullivan, who allowed two runs (both on solo homers) on six hits and two walks, with five strikeouts. The Halos have won six in row and 13 of their last 16 games, and they are on a 7-0 run on the road.

Texas is 3-8 in its last 11 outings, which helped Los Angeles overtake the Rangers for the division lead. Texas is in an 0-6 rut against winning teams, but the Rangers carry positive streaks of 17-5 in division contests and 8-3 at home against southpaws.

The Rangers are still on a 5-2 run in this rivalry, including a three-game sweep at home in mid-May in the only other series this year between the two teams. The Angels have lost in Saunders’ last four road starts against Texas.

Los Angeles has won three in a row behind Saunders, after dropping his previous three starts. Last Wednesday in an 11-3 home win over Colorado, he allowed just one run (a solo homer) on four hits and a walk in six innings, with six strikeouts. Saunders is 4-2 with a 4.57 ERA in seven road starts this year, with one of those losses coming at Texas, where he got shelled for seven runs on eight hits and a walk in 5 1/3 innings of a 10-8 loss on May 15.

Saunders is 3-4 with a 5.48 ERA in eight career starts against the Rangers. On the positive side, with Saunders starting, L.A. is on runs of 54-24 overall, 7-1 in division play, 8-3 on the road and 23-10 against winning teams.

Texas had lost three in row backing Feldman before coming up with a 9-8 win at Arizona last Thursday, with the righty allowing three runs on four hits and a walk in six innings. Feldman is 1-1 with a 3.83 ERA in eight appearances (six starts) at home this year, and he’s 1-3 with a 5.35 ERA in 14 appearances (five starts) against Los Angeles. On May 17, he threw six shutout innings in a 3-0 home win over the Angels but got a no-decision.

The Rangers are 8-3 in Feldman’s last 11 starts, but they are on slides behind Feldman of 4-12 at home and 3-8 against winning teams.

The over for Los Angeles is on streaks of 11-6-1 overall, 5-0 with Saunders taking the ball and 6-2 with Saunders facing the Rangers. On the flip side, the under for Texas is on rolls of 44-17-1 overall, 5-0 at home against lefties, 6-1 in the A.L. West, 24-6-1 at home, 27-11 with Feldman starting and 7-0 behind Feldman in Arlington.

Finally, in this rivalry, the under has hit in five of the last six meetings in Texas.

Covers' Lady Luck: Today's WNBA best bets

Sacramento Monarchs at Chicago Sky (-7.5, 144)

Even their worst offensive performance of the season couldn't keep the Chicago Sky from extending the best home start in franchise history. The WNBA's worst team may not be able to stop them, either.

The Sky look to improve to 5-0 at the UIC Pavilion on Tuesday when they take on the Sacramento Monarchs, owners of the league's worst record.

Chicago (5-3), which hasn't finished with a winning record in its first three seasons of existence, is in second place in the Eastern Conference, one game behind Indiana. Almost all of that success can be attributed to the Sky's play at home, where they improved to a franchise-record 4-0 on Saturday, beating Washington 68-63.

The Sky won despite shooting a season-low 37.5 percent for the game, and scoring only eight points in the opening quarter. Candice Dupree led the way with 23 points, while Jia Perkins added 14 points and eight steals, and Sylvia Fowles had 13 points and 10 rebounds.

"It's nice to have more than one player who likes to put the team on her back,'' Dupree said. "Syl had some huge rebounds and I was trying to crash the offensive boards. It was a total team effort.''

Chicago's effort has been vastly improved at home, where it went 17-34 over its previous three seasons. The Sky are averaging fewer points at home (72.8) than on the road (79.3), but they are giving up an average of 26 fewer points at the UIC Pavilion.

"This year we're more consistent (at home)," Fowles said. "Anytime last year it might have been 'Yeah, whatever,' but we're very focused this year and want to win."

Fowles and the Sky could have an easy time against Sacramento (1-7), which is winless in five road games including the first three of its current five-game trip.

The Monarchs average 72.4 points per game - fifth-fewest in the WNBA - and they've been held to 69.0 points on the road. Sacramento has also lost five in a row overall, including an 86-72 defeat at Detroit on Sunday. It closes this trip Thursday at Minnesota.

Pick: Under 144

Washington Mystics at San Antonio Silver Stars (-3, 146)

Becky Hammon's return has given the San Antonio Silver Stars an immediate lift. Now she'll try to help the defending Western Conference champions move above .500 for the first time this season Tuesday night when they host the Washington Mystics.

Hammon missed two games for San Antonio (3-3) earlier this month while playing with the Russian national team in the European women's championships. Without her, the Silver Stars suffered double-digit losses at New York and Connecticut.

San Antonio has won both games since its leading scorer returned, beating Phoenix 91-87 last Tuesday and defeating Sacramento 62-52 on Friday. After scoring 19 points against the Mercury, Hammon had a season-high 26 on Friday to go with her five rebounds, six assists and five steals.

"I thought Becky really thought the game out well, as she put us in some situations that were really good," Silver Stars coach Dan Hughes said.

Hughes' team jumped out to a 20-7 lead at the end of the first quarter, but had to hold off a rally by Sacramento in the fourth. The Silver Stars shot only 39.7 percent, but outscored the Monarchs 13-3 at the free-throw line. Hammon was 10 of 10 at the line.

Despite scoring fewer than 65 points for the fourth time this season, San Antonio is hoping Hammon's return will improve an offense which is among the league's worst at 69.0 points per game.

Hammon averaged 24.0 points as the Silver Stars won both meetings last season with Washington (4-3).

The Mystics were held below 75 points for the first time this year in their last game, falling 68-63 at Chicago on Saturday for their second straight loss following a 4-1 start.

1 OF WUNDERDOGS RUN LINE PLAYS

Game: Chicago Cubs at Pittsburgh (7:10 PM Eastern)
Pick: Pittsburgh +1.5 runs -150 (runline)

Someone is not paying attention here, and it is the oddsmakers. Ohlendorf has led the Pirates to a 6-1 mark in his last seven home starts. Against a Cubs team that has just 15 road wins in 39 tries, and four of the 15 came by a single run, so they would of covered -1.5 on the road in just 11 of 39! Those are not the kind of numbers you want to hitch your cart to, especially against an under the radar Pirates team winning 21 of 36 at home, and recently unbeatable at home if given +1.5 runs, as they would be 15-2 in their last 17. I’m going with the Pirates on the runline.

Sport: WNBA Basketball
Game: Minnesota Lynx @ Atlanta Dream - Tuesday June 30, 2009 7:00 pm
Pick: 5 unit(s) ATS: Atlanta Dream -5 (-110) (Game of the Month)

Atlanta has already won as many games as they did all of last season, and is one of the most improved teams in the WNBA. The same could be said for Minnesota, until Simeone Augustus went down with an injury. The Lynx scored against Phoenix, which everyone does, but they are clearly not as potent of a team without their star player. The Dream, has quietly scored 81 or more points in each of their five home games, and is a big threat on home hardwood. They are 3-2 at home with one of the losses in OT. The Lynx are struggling to get on a run, as they are now 4-11 ATS after a win, and the Dream is now 4-1 ATS against a team with a winning record. I'm going with Atlanta here.

Handicapper: Wunderdog Sports
Sport: MLB Baseball
Game: Arizona Diamondbacks @ Cincinnati Reds - Tuesday June 30, 2009 7:10 pm
Pick: 5 unit(s) MONEYLINE: Cincinnati Reds +130 (Game of the Month)

Dan Haren has put up some exceptional numbers over his career, and has to be considered a top pitcher in MLB right now. He is 71-57 for his career with an ERA of 3.57. There is a caveat to all of that though, as Haren has never pitched behind a team with a particularly strong offense, and has had to fight and scratch for every win. That is certainly true on the road, where he has pitched his teams to just a 31-28 mark. Right now Arizona is struggling mightily, dropping five straight, eight of nine, and 17 of 24. The Reds are 9-3 in Arroyo's last 12 starts as a dog, and the D-Backs are just 3-13 in their last 16 against right-hand pitching. I’m going with the Reds in this one.

Tuesday ... 40 DIME RAYS (WITH Garza) - This kid Matt Garza is real-deal Holyfield, and will emerge as one of the best pitchers in baseball over the next few years. Believe that. And with off-speed abilities, and the Rays’ recent surge, they will earn their season-high seventh straight win. The Rays have passed the Blue Jays in the American League East, they have their sights set on the Yankees, and they’re gunning for the Red Sox.

The Blue Jays continue to show us the hot-and-cold streaks. On May 18, the Blue Jays were 3-1/2 games ahead of Boston after winning 27 of their first 41 games. The Rays on the other hand had clawed their way back to .500 (20-20) after losing 14 of their first 22. Ever since, Toronto has lost 23 of 37 while Tampa Bay has won 23 of 38 to move two games within the Blue Jays for third place in the East.

This team is playing tremendous with its offense, as they’ve scored a major league-best 438 runs. And as we saw last night, Blue Jays' offense continued to struggle after a rough weekend against the defending champion Phillies. They were limited to no runs and two hits through the first six innings, and barely scratched their way into the game last night.

Garza might be a mere 3-3 in six starts against the Blue Jays, but he has a stingy 1.99 ERA and is 3-0 when receiving at least one run of support. Take the Rays tonight, as they continue their torrid run.
